Winter Energy Efficiency Tips

Winter Energy Efficiency Tips

The holiday season is upon us, and PNM wants to help you stay warm and keep your electricity bills down. Here are five seasonal tips to cut back on your energy use while still staying festive:

  • Use LED string lights or laser light projectors. LED string lights are cheaper than traditional incandescent lights. Outdoor laser projectors that shine holiday lights on your home cost even less on your electric bill, take up less room in your garage, and are safer than climbing on the roof.
  • Use a power strip and a timer for your Christmas tree or outdoor lights. Avoid keeping your holiday lights on during the day or when everyone is sleeping.
  • Turn off all the lights in the room when your Christmas tree is on. Darkening the room and keeping the focus on your tree creates a nice holiday ambiance and saves you money on your electric bill.
  • Seal cracks, gaps, and air leaks. Reduce your heating costs by sealing cracks and gaps. Add weather stripping and caulking around all doors and windows, as well as attic entryways, to minimize air leaks. Seal the air leaks around all utility cut-throughs for pipes, gaps around fireplace chimneys, recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind your kitchen cupboards, bathroom cabinets, and closets.
  • Lower your thermostat. If it makes sense for your lifestyle, find out how low you can set your thermostat and still feel comfortable. Start by setting it a couple of degrees lower than your normal setting and wear a favorite sweater or hoodie or snuggle with a blanket.
Treecycling

Once the holidays are over, please consider recycling your live Christmas tree.

PNM, along with the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, will offer free treecycling after the holidays. You can recycle your tree starting December 26, 2024, to January 8, 2025.
