Halloween Decorating Safety Tips from PNM

As Halloween approaches, it's time to transform your home into a haunted haven! While you're conjuring up spooky scenes, don't let electrical hazards turn your festive fun into a frightful fiasco. PNM has some important safety tips to ensure your Halloween is all treats and no tricks!

  1. Do not carry ladders while extended and carry them horizontally to avoid potential contact with overhead power lines.
  2. Always unplug lights before going to bed or leaving your home.
  3. Keep electric cords out of high-traffic areas where people or pets can trip or become entangled.
  4. Cords should be plugged into outlets equipped with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). GFCIs protect you from electric shocks.
  5. Always look up and look out for power lines when decorating outside and stay at least 10 feet away from them. Only use decorations rated specifically for outdoor use.
  6. Only use lights that have been safety tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratory (UL). Look for the UL label on the box and on each string.
  7. Do not place light strands or electrical cords into trees or vegetation near power lines and never place anything on utility poles.

Happy Halloween from PNM! We hope these tips help you have a safe and spooktacular Halloween!
