Powerstories:
Smith's Food and Drug
Smith's Food and Drug is saving enough energy to power nearly 150 homes a year.
Smith's Food & Drug took advantage of the PNM Retrofit Rebate Program to significantly reduce energy usage and costs for lighting in freezers and coolers and to enhance their customers' shopping experience.
Using LED replacement lights, an average Smith's store will reduce annual energy in its refrigerated and frozen food cases from 129,000 kWh to 36,000 kWh. On average, the stores will save $6,000 to $10,000 annually.
Improvements Smith's made include:
- Replacing more than 4,600 fluorescent bulbs in hundreds of glass door freezers and coolers with more-efficient LED motion-activated lights.
- Installing compact fluorescent bulbs in checkstand light fixtures.
- Replacing older metal fans in refrigeration cases with lighter motors that are programmed to maintain airflow while using less electricity.
- Working with employees to make sure all ovens, fryers and other equipment is turned off when not in use.
"These changes are the right thing to do for several reasons. Saving energy saves resources and money, and in turn we can use those savings to enhance our customers' shopping experiences and save them money. We will continue to work on finding more ways to use this exciting technology that helps us reach those goals within our stores," said Denis George, Energy Manager for Kroger (Smith's parent company).
